I live very close to Wits University and besides going to a couple of functions at the Great Hall, I have only ever just driven past and not given much thought to what makes up the university campus.
I immediately jumped at the opportunity when invited by a good friend to go on a tour of the Wits West Campus today which, until the early 80’s,was the grounds for the Rand Easter Show, I know! Who knew?
I was amazed by the architecture of the various buildings and the enormous collection of art on the Campus, not to mention the enormity of the place that includes beautiful spacious gardens. Our guide, Professor Cathy Monroe was so knowledgeable and held our attention right the way through the two and a half hour tour.
Despite the fact that it is officially winter here in South Africa we could not have asked for more perfect weather. It was a little nippy in the shade but very pleasant when walking in the sunshine.
After the tour we went off to the Rand Club, for a carvery lunch. We feasted on the magnificent spread of starters, hot veggies, a selection of roast meats and potatoes, yummy hot gravy, an enormous cheese platter and the most impressive choice of desserts I have ever seen. There was no better way to end off tour than a good meal with good friends and lots of laughter until we eventually rolled out the doors in time for a late(ish) siesta. It was a good, good day.
